Virgin Media one of the first ISPs to block Pirate Bay

Virgin Media was one of the first main Internet Service Providers yesterday to block access to filesharing site, The Pirate Bay. Virgin Media along with it’s rivals such as BT and Sky were given a court order on Monday, to block access to the site which was deemed by a court ruling, that it breached Copyright laws.

Virgin Media will be carrying coverage of the London Olympics 2012 from the BBC and Eurosport. Highlights include:
- 24 BBC live channels in SD and HD
- 3D transmissions from both BBC and Eurosport
- Advanced Red Button Interactive Services on the TiVo platform.

In a partnership with London Underground, Virgin Media will be providing Wi-Fi at up to 120 stations by the end of 2012. This will include a number of deep bore platforms. The system will not extend into the tunnels.

Virgin Media have released their financial statements for 2011 which shows encouraging take up of new services. The much promoted TiVo gained 12% of the TV customer base at 435,000. There is also a growing demand for faster broadband services and mobile phone services. However there are only 5,000 more cable based customers than at the end of 2010 with a loss of many off net customers. Achieving more revenue from existing customers seems to be the way forward and for the first time the company achieved a positive net income balance for the year.
