Love they way employers liieing to get there own way only thing stiffling job creation is them themselves. I live in a flat, and we have a cable connection to the room which I previously used for a modem from Virgin Media. If I remember rightly we're on the XL package, and other rooms have cable TV. I want to remove the modem and plug a box in, although I'm unable to contact my landlord for the time being in order for him to call Virgin and ask them to send us another box. I've looked at the website, and allegedly since we're on XL an extra V+ box won't cost us anything to run or to get installed. This being the case, what would be the issue with buying a box from eBay and using it? As far as I can see, it wouldn't be illegal as we're already paying for Virgin, and they wouldn't charge us for an extra box anyway?

Again, if this is horrifyingly illegal please remember that I don't know anything :)

To me it seems like am going along the motorway at 250k, hit 251k and come to a stop, so starting all over again.

Where I think it should be a constant 250k speed, cruise control setting for p2p :-)

We have been long time customers of VM (since before they bought out Telewest) and only recently after hearing of the 'double speed' increase, decided to take advantage and upgrade to 30Mb (from 10Mb) so that we would get an increase to 60Mb instead of 20. At an additional £4, this sounded like a great deal and until recently were very happy.

The setup at home has always consisted (since having more than 1 pc around which has been that way for at least 5 years or more) of a router which is fed from the cable modem and direct LAN feeds 2 pc's aswell as providing a wireless transmission for the laptop and internet radio plus mobiles.

For the record, I have always had to disconnect the router when phoning VM support due to the fact that they will not deal with you if you have anything between their modem and your pc setup. I can understand this to some degree because its elementary problem elimination.
However I have always just hooked up my router after the problem has been checked and continued fine with the modem - router - pc setup.

I was very happy with this setup till recently, the connection started dropping.

This dropping started about a month after upgrading to the Superhub which we were told was required to be able to get the speed increase.

Previous to the superhub we had a SurfModem (Motorola) which operated fine. Sure the modem would drop now and then but a simple modem power lead reset would do the trick and we'd be back online sharply.

This unfortunately has not been the case with the Superhub.

I had been using the Superhub in modem mode due to us already having a fully functional Belkin router and there didn't seem to be any compatibility issues. No overly bad increased latency either (I am an online gamer so I would notice).

So as recent as last week I made the call and arranged for a VM engineer to pop round which was yesterday.
They sent an apprentice around, but thats another story. At least he wasn't clueless (although I had to remind him the superhub IP changes when you switch it to Modem mode).

He gave me the usual 'you need to disconnect the router because it may be causing the dropping' statement. I just find this hard to believe although I could be wrong but uptil recently prior to installing the Superhub this setup worked fine.

After an hour of messing around, checking cables etc, we got the superhub back up and running (in Modem mode with the Belkin router) and he left. I decided I wouldn't change the setup until we saw another dropped connection.

After a while we started to see the dropped connections again, so I decided to heed the advice and try setting up without the Belkin.
I decided to eliminate the whole router compatibility issue by bypassing it altogether and just using the Superhub. Therefore if we still got any problems we would know its not because of the router.
I'm used to setting up the home network so I wasn't bothered about that and proceeded to setup the systems (MAC ID's etc).
That was yesterday night.

Today I am back at it again and so far the most troublesome thing to setup has been the internet radio which just refuses to see the superhubs wireless network. This also goes for my Mobile phone. This previously took me about 10 minutes to setup on my Belkin router and never had any issues after that.

The 2 home LAN PC's seem to be connected fine and not dropping HOWEVER the page load times seem to be quite laggy which I am not understanding as speedtest.net is showing speeds upto 62Mbps which seems great but the page loading is laggier than before (when we used the Belkin router).

I am now considering putting the router back into the equation and returning the superhub to 'Modem mode' status.
I thought I would post about this here after a friend of mine pointed me in this direction regarding the Superhubs being 'crap'.

However we never had a VGM we had a Motorola Surf Modem previously so I have no experience of those but our previous modem did seem to do the job fine despite not having router or wireless functionality.

Sorry for the lengthy post but what do you think about all this, I will probably be phoning VM tech again soon to get this sorted but I am trying my best to troubleshoot any setup errors that could be from my side first.

Any tips, let me know.

1. As the house doesn't have VM, will they lay the cable from the Green box to the tee in the pavement before, they send out a tech to connect the TV, Net and Phone?

2. The house we are moving to has a block paved drive, but has grass next to it, so I presume they will put the cable under the grass to the house?

3. When they do come to connect the TV, Phone and net up, can we let the tech, know where to want the VM boxes on the wall (inside)?

4. I presume the phone number we got now, will be the same at the new house, same town and both in LN6?

This could really be a revolution against these big companies who their only aim is to make money and more money. But for once we can fight back by sharing our info specially in these economic austerity.
